Notes

98 records

Like all species in this genus, the female retains the developing eggs within her carapace; a common feature in the majority of myodocopid species but unique in the halocyprids. It is the most commonly reported species of Euconchoecia within the Atlantic, where it ranges from 35°S to 42°N. Its northern limit in the Northeast Atlantic to the east of the mid-Atlantic Ridge is around 18°N, but in the northwest it extends to much higher latitudes. It is a near-surface living species almost entirely restricted to the epipelagic zone and is one of the few halocyprids that is abundant in neritic waters. Its rather skewed distribution in the Northwest Atlantic may result from the pattern of surface current flow, where its distribution may be strongly influenced by advection in the Gulf Stream.
