Notes

78 records

This species was originally described from equatorial waters in the Atlantic, but since then has only been reported from the Indo-Pacific at locations as far apart as off Peru, in the Celebes Sea and off Oman. The genus Euconchoecia has undergone a substantial radiation in the Indo-Pacific (Chavtur and Stovbun, in press) and its species often dominate the ostracod populations in the euphotic zone. Adult female Euconchoecia are unique amogst other halocyprids, because they brood their embryos within the carapace. This species is extremely abundant in the near-surface, neritic waters in the Arabian Sea close to upwelling centres, and so its presence in the Gulf of Guinea may also be associated with upwelling. However, if this were to be the case, it would also be expected to be found in the upwelling centres of the Benguela Region, but Iles (1953) did not report it, nor has re-examination of his material has not revealed its presence.
