Notes

37 records

This small species was first described from the Southeast Pacific close to 40°S. The vast majority of the subsequent records have been from the North Atlantic as far north as 49°N. There is a single record from west of the South Island of New Zealand. It is an abyssopelagic species taken at depths >3000m, so what we know about its zoogeographical distribution is probably unrepresentative, and is a reflection of the limited geographical range of sampling undertaken at such depths. In the Northeast Atlantic its northward spread may be curtailed by the shoaling topography rather than any other ecological factor. Initially described as an Archiconchoecia species, it has recently been split off and placed in a genus with maculata (Chavtur and Stovbun, 2003); the latter species that has only been caught once. The carapace shapes of these two species are highly characteristic and they are unlikely to be confused with any others.
