Notes

280 records

This species was first described from the Mediterranean, and subsequently reported widely from subtropical and tropical latitudes. When revising the genus, Chavtur and Stovbun (2003) established it as the type species. They created a tribe Archiconchoeciinae to include all the species previous classified as Archiconchoecia and dividing in the original genus into ten genera. They also described a number of other species that are closely related to this species, and expressed reservations about the identities of many of the records from the Atlantic. We have not compared our Atlantic material to specimens from the Mediterranean, so the size data given below may not be identical with Müller’s original species. There are subtle differences in carapace shapes and in the finer details of some of the limbs. At present it is not possible to confirm whether or not the Atlantic specimens are either the same as those from the Mediterranean. This very small species is poorly sampled by the nets with 320µm mesh that were used in the Discovery sampling programmes. The profiles show that it is a shallow mesopelagic species by day occurring principally at 100-300m. At night the population drifts up and has occasionally been taken in the neuston. The present latitudinal range of records of this ‘species’ is 42°S to 45°N; it tends to be more abundant in the oligotrophic gyres at mid-latitudes then in the tropics.
