In the early literature there was considerable confusion between P. oblonga and Proceroecia procera. P. oblonga was first described by Claus, but in the same year Müller (1890) also described a new species as C. oblonga, but in 1906 he pointed out that the species he had named C. variabilis (Muller 1890) was synonymous with Claus’s C. oblonga, moreover, C. oblonga Claus (1894) and oblonga Müller (1890) were synonymous with what is now Proceroecia procera (Müller, 1894). Skogsberg (1920) gave a full description of this species, so now there should be no confusion between these superficially similar species. Poulsen (1973) re-classified it in Paraconchoecia. Part of this initial confusion arose because, as Müller pointed out, there are two forms of this species: Form A which has the right asymmetrical gland opening at the usual position at the posterior ventral corner; whereas Form B has the gland’s opening shifted slightly anteriorly – as is seen in Proceroecia procera. However, most subsequent reports of this species have not distinguished between the two forms, so only a single distribution map is shown. The forms were distinguished in the analyses of Discovery samples and so separate profiles are shown for them. Preliminary investigations on these two forms suggest they are not specifically different.

The map shows that this is a common and widespread species, mostly at latitudes of <40°. At each position both forms co-occur, but they do not always coincide at all depths. However, any differences in the bathymetric profiles are trivial. Careful morphological examination has revealed no other characters separating the two forms consistent with their being different morphs of the same species.
