Notes

24 records

This is a sibling species of P. mamillata, which was described from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans by Müller (1906). He noted there were two size groups, and Deevey and Brooks (1980) split off the smaller form as P. nanomamillata. Earlier records may either species. As a member of Müller’s ‘spinifera group’ it was re-classified as a Paraconchoecia species by Poulsen (1973), but it seems probable that it should be placed in a separate genus together with its sibling P. mamillata. It is quite a common species in the deep mesopelagic at middle latitudes of around 30°, where it overlies mamillata. The map shows that at present it appears to be an Atlantic endemic that ranges from the equator to 44°N, but this may be because it has not been recognised elsewhere. No bathymetric profiles are shown for this species.
