Notes

130 records

This species is a member of the new tribe Metaconchoeciinae, which has recently been established by Chavtur and Angel (in press). The tribe includes at least 33 species, seven which had been classified by Müller’s (1906) in his ‘rotundata group’. In his original description of Conchoecia rotundata Müller (1890) stated there were two size forms, one long the other short. Iles (1953) named the two forms C. teretivalvata (short form) and C. skogsbergi (long form). Iles (1953) used Skogsberg’s (1920) account of the long form as the definitive description for Conchoecia skogsbergi, but failed to designate either type material or type localities for his new species. Gooday (1981) described this species when he revised the ‘skogsbergi complex’, amongst his novel species all of which could be included in the original concept of the long form of Conchoecia. He also identified forms of this species in the material available to both Müller and Poulsen. Otherwise it has only been identified in Discovery material, and from the tropical western Atlantic, so its currently known latitudinal range of 44°N to 36°S is almost certainly unrepresentative particularly outside the Atlantic. The bathymetric profiles show that it is most abundant between 50-300m and there was no evidence for it undertaking diel vertical migration.
