This species was described from the Atlantic by Ellis (1984) when she divided M. reticulata into three species. Müller (1906) originally placed M. reticulata in his ‘spinifera group’ of species. Granata and Caporiacco (1949) proposed the genus Macroconchoecia for M. reticulata, and subsequently Sylvester-Brady (1961) designated it as the type species. Poulsen (1973) placed M. reticulata in his new genus Paraconchoecia together with other species in Müller’s (1906) ‘spinifera group’. Ellis (1984) when she redescribed both M. reticulata and M. caudata, described this species together with M. macroreticulata, but retained the four species in the genus Conchoecia. However, they are quite distinct from the other Paraconchoecia species and it is appropriate to classify them in a separate genus, Macroconchoecia. M. spinireticulata shares with M. caudata the characteristic of rows of spines arranged along the ridges of the carapace, especially in the shoulder vaults. It is a smaller species than M. reticulata, and occupies rather shallower depths (700-3000m, mostly 900-1500m). Its known distributional range is presently restricted to 35°N and the equator in the North Atlantic. However, the sizes ranges given by Poulsen (1973) for reticulata suggest that his material included this species, and so it may well occur outside the Atlantic.
