Notes

51 records

This large rare species was first described from 35°S in the South Atlantic. Since then it has been collected mostly from depths of 1000-3000m. In common with the other species in the genus, it is characterized by the large group of gland cells opening close to the midpoint of the ventral edge of each carapace valve. Müller (1906) did not ascribe any of these species to a species group, but Skogsberg (1920) suggested they be placed in the “gaussi” group. Poulsen (1973) erected a new genus, Gaussicia, for the three known species, but as usual designated neither a type species nor a type locality. Gooday (1976) when he thoroughly redescribed this and the two other species in the group temporarily retained these species within Conchoecia, and described a new fourth member. Rudjakov (1962) described a subspecies G. gaussi curilensis from very deep water in the North Pacific. It seems likely that re-examination of this subspecies will result in it being raised to full species status. Even so gaussi like many of the other very deep living species may be prove to be more widespread than is currently recognized.
