Notes

53 records

Müller (1906) when he described this species did not attribute to any species group, but Skogsberg (1920) placed in a new group, the “gaussi group”. Poulsen (1973) then proposed that the three species in this group should be placed in a new genus Gaussicia. Gooday (1976) thoroughly redescribed the three previously known species and described a new one; but he did have reservations about the specimens he identified as G. aff. edentata. While he kept all the species as Conchoecia species, he emphasized the differences between G. edentata and G. gaussi and the others. edentata was originally described from the Southern Ocean where it ranges between 22°S and 71°S. It also reported as a rarity in the tropical North Atlantic, and also in the North Atlantic and North Pacific between 40° and 50 to 55°N. Whether all these apparently isolated records are of the same species needs to be investigated. It has a deep mesopelagic to bathypelagic distribution.
