Notes

84 records

This species was originally described from the Southern Ocean, but was subsequently found to be quite common at depths of 1500-3000m in the North Atlantic, although these specimens show some differences from the type descriptions. At deep bathypelagic depths it is often the numerically dominant component of the halocyprid community, and so it may prove to be a useful indicator of the spread of deep water masses. The map shows that it has almost exclusively been reported from the Atlantic and Southern Oceans ranging from 72°S to 60°N. Being such a deep living species its further northwards spread in the North Atlantic may be prevented by the shoaling of the Icelandic Basin towards the Iceland-Faeroes Ridge. In their revision of the genus Metaconchoecia Chavtur and Angel (in press) are creating a new tribe Metaconchoeciinae, which will consist of ten genera. Deeveyoecia arcuata is the type species for its genus, which also includes a North Pacific species, bathyrotundata (Chavtur, 1977). At abyssopelagic depths (~3500m) in the North Atlantic a small form of this species has been collected that may prove to be yet another species.
