Notes

Records: 258 This is a large highly ornamented halocyprid that is endemic to the Southern Ocean, where it occurs well south of the Polar Front. Muller (1906) originally placed it in his ‘imbricata group’ of species, so Poulsen (1973) included it in Conchoecissa when he reinstated Claus’s genus. It is very similar in general appearance to Conchoecissa plinthina but is smaller and its tubercles at the posterior ventral corner are better developed. The few records of this species from along, and to the north of, the Equator in the Atlantic need to be re-assessed; they seem likely to result from confusion with plinthina. However, its presence at low latitudes in the North Atlantic may be indicative of the northwards spread of Antarctic Intermediate Water, and if so it could be a useful indicator of this water mass. It is a deep mesopelagic to bathypelagic species usually occurring at depths >750m.
