Notes

120 Records

This is one of three species formerly classified as Halocypris species that Poulsen (1969) placed in his new genus Fellia (named after his cat). The map shows that the northern limit to its range is 18°N, whereas in the Southern Hemisphere it extends south to 52°S. Its bathymetric profile on the Equator in the Atlantic shows that by day the bulk of the population is at 400-600m. A subspecies (cornuta dispar) originally described from the Southern Ocean that lacks the carapace tubercles was raised to full species rank by Deevey (1982).

The live coloration of this large species was illustrated by Müller (1906 Plate 1) to be generally orange with dark red pigmentation of the abdomen.
