The Artful Crow

Jiří Hřebíček's Image

Jirí Hrebícek (Czech Republic) creates an impressionistic vision of a perching crow.

Jirí often visits his local park in Basel as it’s an ideal place to experiment with camera techniques.

In winter, large flocks of crows arrive to roost in the treetops.

To create this painterly effect of a sitting crow, Jirí deliberately moved his camera in different directions while using a long shutter speed.

Editor and Chair of the Jury Kathy Moran remarks “elegant and haunting are the words that come to mind when I look at this photograph. The movement is just enough to give it an edge, but not enough to take away from the mood created by the light and the perfect placement of the bird.”

Crows are intelligent birds and have adapted to living alongside humans, with gardens and parks providing a regular food supply. In Switzerland they are found north of the Alps. Some of the highest concentrations are found around Basel.

Jiří is a zoologist by training and an amateur wildlife photographer. Over the past couple of years, he’s had the privilege of travelling to some of the world’s most beautiful places to experience and photograph the mysteries of nature and to make his childhood dreams come true. He’s always been particularly fascinated by birds and their freedom as well as by art. Jiri tries to capture their fragile beauty and also to put something of himself into his photos.
