Antonio Fernandez (Spain) creates a thought-provoking aerial image of seawater crashing on to black sand.
When Antonio spotted pools of bright green water that seemed to be glowing, he flew his drone over them to create the scene he was longing for. “I’m looking forward to discovering what others see in the image,” he says.
Iceland’s distinctive black sands are the result of basaltic ash deposited during volcanic activity. The steep slope of the beach means the waves retreat quickly, and the pools of seawater left in the depressions glow bright green because of high concentrations of algae.
Iceland’s waters are a swirling mix of ocean currents, as the relatively warm Atlantic water from the south meets cold water from the Greenland Sea in the north.

Antonio is an architect. Since his childhood, he’s been skilled in drawing and painting. This, together with his passion for nature, made him passionate about nature photography. Through it, his motivation grew to capture those memorable moments in which nature invites us to be mere spectators of its beauty. Through his photographs he aims to show simple and intimate landscapes, conveying the links to the places that inspire him and trying to reflect his artistic vision of natural fragments.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
