Sasha Jumanca (Germany/Romania) finds two tawny owlets curiously watching people walking by.
Sasha had seen tawny owls in the neighbourhood before but was surprised to discover these so close to the heart of the city.
Sasha had been watching these tawny owlets for several days in a park near his home. They were losing their fluffy white down feathers and he wanted to capture this time of transition, still young and vulnerable together but soon to fly away.
Owlets leave the nest before they can fly, in a phase known as ‘branching’. They will jump, flutter and climb around branches of nearby trees while begging for food from their parents. This lasts for several weeks before they eventually grow their flight muscles and feathers and fly away.

Sasha discovered a love for bird photography when he was seven years old after visiting Nymphenburg Park in Munich, Germany, and seeing a kingfisher for the first time. That moment sparked a deep desire within Sasha to capture the beauty of birds through photography. That same year he received his first camera and since then has been exploring and documenting various bird species and other animals. One of Sasha’s favourite places to visit is the Danube Delta.
