Frog Eat Frog

Jaime Culebras's Image

Jaime Culebras (Spain) spots a hungry Spix’s horned treefrog feasting on a common big-headed frog.

The tropical wilderness of the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve is home to the highest number of frogs in the world per square kilometre.

Jaime has been following the horned treefrog for years, and taking this photograph was a highlight of his career.

Horned treefrogs eat a wide variety of prey, and it is not unusual for them to eat other frogs.

These horned treefrogs live in the leaf litter of the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, which is under threat as it sits on 1.7 billion barrels of crude oil reserves. While drilling continues in some areas of the reserve, Ecuadorians voted to end oil extraction on the edge of the reserve in 2023.
