Dewdrop Flamingo

Jan Leßmann and Hermann Hirsch's Image

Jan Leßmann and Hermann Hirsch (Germany) position a dewdrop on a spider web over the eye of a distant flamingo.

On a misty April morning, Jan and Hermann were photographing flamingos when they noticed spider webs strung between reeds and beaded with dew.

For them, this photograph symbolises the diversity of the ecosystem in one of Europe’s most important wetlands.

Greater flamingos are a symbol of the Camargue, their only nesting site in France. More than 50,000 may gather each spring to forage in shallow water for crustaceans, insects and algae.
