Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar (Mexico) shows the devastating path of a new cross-country, tourist railway.

To reach a point where he could launch his drone, Fernando had to travel through four kilometres of an underground cave system. The end result of his challenging trek was this image.

Celina Chien, Storyteller, Artist and Competition Judge, was struck by the scale in this image. ‘This photo captures the sheer magnitude and violence of deforestation. The key to this photo is the scale. Towering trees are made to look like spilled matchsticks. It instils almost a sense of panic - this laceration across the Earth that seems to go on forever into our future.’

Cutting across the country through protected rainforest, the railway will cost USD$9.8 billion to construct and is part of the Mexican government’s plan to connect tourist spots. The aim being to bring in important economic benefits and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. While trains are a more environmentally friendly form of transport, conservationists warn of devastating consequences.

• Protect green spaces near your home by joining a local community group. If you can't find one, start one with your family and friends.
• Help prevent further habitat destruction by signing petitions or writing letters to your elected officials. Encourage others to do the same by sharing this image with your family and friends.
