Luca Melcarne (France) makes the most of his mountain guide skills to reveal the fascinating lives of Alpine animals.
To enable an early ascent into ibex territory, Luca had spent a bitterly cold night in a temporary shelter in the French Alps, having skied for six hours across the natural park. Luca thawed his camera with his breath and took the ibex’s portrait.
Lucas Bustamante, Wildlife Photojournalist, Conservation Biologist and Competition Judge, notes that ‘it is very challenging to successfully accomplish a white subject, background and environment, but I believe the photographer did it well here. The ibex appears as a ghost and blends with its environment, creating a very provocative portrait.’

Luca has been passionate about animal watching and photography from a young age, having always lived in the Drôme Valley, a region at the foot of the Vercors Massif in the western French Alps. After studying Sport, he decided to become a mountain guide so he could work in the heart of nature in a career that allowed him to pass on his love and knowledge of fauna and flora. He hopes that through his activity as a guide and photographer he can raise awareness and bear witness not only to the beauty of nature but also to its fragility.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
