Rabbit-Snatcher

Lauren Lavonne Pritchett's Image

Lauren Lavonne Pritchett (USA) uses a low angle to highlight the moment a raven seizes a baby rabbit in the grass.

Hunkered down near an old rabbit warren on the island of San Juan, Lauren was hoping for the arrival of an eagle. But it was a different opportunistic avian that gave Lauren her picture. A raven landed and in two hops, grabbed the young rabbit.

Ravens are strong fliers, often performing tumbling aerobatics. With their thick-set beaks, they can fly with food as large as a rabbit. Lauren had noticed that the rabbit had not been moving and was likely already dead or terminally ill with haemorrhagic disease.
