Vishnu Gopal (India) records the moment a lowland tapir steps cautiously out of the swampy Brazilian rainforest.
Finding hoofprints on a forest track near his campsite, Vishnu waited nearby. An hour later, the tapir appeared. Using a long exposure and torchlight to capture texture and movement, Vishnu framed the tapir, head turned to the side, as it emerged from the forest.
This keystone species is threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting and traffic collisions. Lowland tapirs rely on the forest for their diet of fruit and other vegetation and in turn they act as important seed dispersers. However, these gentle creatures can also be opportunists. This one was looking to scavenge near Vishnu’s campsite on the edge of Brazil’s southeastern Atlantic rainforest.
Richard Sabin, Principal Curator of Mammals at the Museum and Competition Judge notes, ‘I love the cheeky well-hello-there feeling of this image. Tapirs are fantastic-looking animals and are such an important part of the forest ecosystem. The way the head of the animal is lit while the rest of the body is in shadow really creates an enigmatic atmosphere.’
