Cranes Up and Away

Arjun Jenigiri's Image

Arjun Jenigiri (USA) captures the beauty and power of an airborne formation of sandhill cranes.

Drawn to Nebraska’s Platte River by the epic spring migration of sandhill cranes, Arjun was on a mission to photograph the event. He was nearly thwarted, however, by an entry age limit to the hide overlooking the roosts. But the budding birder convinced the wardens he knew what he was doing.

At 04:30 on a freezing March morning Arjun heard the trumpet-trill calls of the cranes. As the sky filled with their graceful silhouettes, he quickly took advantage of the early morning light to capture the beauty of their flying formation.

Each year, sandhill cranes overwinter in the fields of southern USA. The Platte River is a stop-off point on the spring migration for more than half a million birds enroute to their breeding grounds in the far north of the country.
