The smallest songster

Nooa Mikkola's Image

Nooa Mikkola (Finland) focuses on a goldcrest that has briefly stopped searching for insects in order to sing.

Nooa homed in on a goldcrest, as it sang its high-pitched, rhythmic song from a Norway spruce behind his home. The low light on the rainy spring day brought out the bird's colours, including a hint of gold at the back of its yellow crest.

These tiny birds weigh just under six grams and are considered Europe's smallest bird. They are widespread in northern Europe and Asia, breeding in coniferous forests and migrating further south to avoid harsh winters.
