Mighty mite

Tim Crabb's Image

Tim Crabb (UK) focuses on the moment a mite predates an aphid nymph.

Spotting a whirligig mite near a group of black bean aphid nymphs on a plant stem, Tim focused in, ready to capture the moment the two clashed. In a split second, the mite approached, pushed the nymph onto its side, gripped it with its pincer-like mouthparts and scuttled off with its prize – luckily Tim had just enough time to get his shot.

Black bean aphids feed on plants and reproduce rapidly, making them unpopular with many growers. Most mites are predatory and feed on small invertebrates, making them more popular with gardeners.

Behind the lens

Tim Crabb

Tim hails from the cornfields and hog farms of rural Iowa, USA. He moved to the UK for love in 2014 and quickly fell in love with the moorlands and woodlands of Devon. He has been serious about photography for many years. Initially, he focused on landscapes and travel photography, but in 2019 he took a photo that showed him another world that he had never seen. This world was the world of insects, and over the past few years he has developed a passion for photographing this tiny world and its strange and wonderful creatures.
