The greatest concentration of bears in the park was around the waterfall. That was where tourists took photos of the animals waiting, open-mouthed, to catch salmon swimming upstream. But, having found this bear hunting in calmer waters, Hannah preferred to focus on a quieter scene. With patience, she shot the full reflection of the bear and its meal.
In spring, Alaskan brown bears in Katmai National Park emerge from hibernation to feed on meadow plants and to forage for clams on the mudflats. Then, in early summer, when the nutrient-rich sockeye salmon arrive, the bears feast. This ensures their survival through the winter. These bears are among the heaviest in the world and some may eat 30 fish a day.
