The Frog-Hunter

Javier Aznar González de Rueda's Image

With a passion for photographing the behaviour of smaller creatures in their natural surroundings, Javier was delighted when, on a night hike, one of his team spotted this mini drama on the forest floor. Crouching down on a jumble of fallen leaves, he persevered until he had a clear composition, with both faces in focus.

This tiny frog, less than two centimetres long, has good reason to look surprised – it is in the clutches of a wandering spider. While other families of frogs, such as poison dart frogs, are famous for being toxic, this frog’s comparatively mild poison was not enough to ward off this spider.
