Snow Hunting

Jérémie Villet's Image

Camouflaged in its silky white ermine winter coat, a stoat bounds across a snowy field. Days earlier Jérémie had spotted numerous stoat tracks in the snow. Keen to photograph them against the snow-clad landscape, he set up a hide nearby. After three days the stoat appeared, dashing around the field completely unperturbed by Jérémie’s presence.

White winter fur provides perfect camouflage for stoats in the snow. The only giveaway is the tip of their tail, which remains black all year round. Stoats are expert hunters of small mammals such as the voles that are abundant in the French Haut-Doubs region.

Jérémie believes that somewhere on Earth, what we imagine becomes real. He left his studies to travel alone by ski and sled. Over these long, solitary expeditions in remote places, Jérémie uses the pure snow as a painter uses a white canvas. All his white photos are published in an art book titled Neige, and his work is featured in art galleries around the world.
