A Sickening Delicacy

Bence Máté's Image

These common frogs and toads have been left to die in a pool of bloody water and frogspawn. Their hind legs have been severed and gathered by hunters, the cuts sometimes causing their lungs to spill out. Bence was shocked at the callous and brutal method of removing the legs while the amphibians were still alive.

When frogs and toads gather in large numbers to reproduce they are easily harvested. In the EU, while the capture of wild frogs is regulated, scenes like this still occur. Frogs’ legs are a delicacy and it is estimated that over one billion wild and farmed frogs are killed every year to meet the demand.
