Asiatic Cheetah

Frans Lanting's Image

The Asiatic cheetah is one of the rarest mammals on earth.

Fewer than 100 survive in the wild, and all of them are confined to Iran’s central desert, where I deployed camera traps. One of them captured this haunting image of a wary cat after dark that is struggling to eke out a living in bone-dry habitat where prey species have been decimated by hunters.
