Storm rollers

Sandra Bartocha's Image

After hours struggling to keep her tripod steady and lens free of spray and snow at -10 degrees Celsius, everything came together in one moment and Sandra captured this perfect shot. ‘I took hundreds of images that day,’ she says, ‘but just this one conveyed the true feeling of wildness’.

Waves crash against an island along the Norwegian coast during a winter storm. The peaks in the distance once formed the base of an ancient mountain range called the Caledonides that stood as tall as the Himalayas. At nearly two billion years old, these rocks are older than all animal and plant life on Earth.
