Flamingo veil

Theo Allofs's Image

Theo headed up a steep, rough track to get to the lake. Next morning at sunrise, he took off with his powered paraglider, one hand on the brake, the other holding his camera. Below him, flamingos feeding in the shallows left trails ‘like beautiful veils’ in the muddy water, creating their ephemeral design.

With a specialised bill, containing up to 10,000 thin plates, the lesser flamingo filters microscopic algae and other plankton from the alkaline-saline lakes of east Africa’s Great Rift Valley. Food is plentiful and so these sociable birds gather in flocks for protection from predators and to raise their young.
