Alexandre hiked higher as the storm began to clear, looking for ‘where the shapes of the mountains were in equilibrium’. To combine the powerful landscape with the otherworldly atmosphere and keep the detail, he stitched 12 frames into one panoramic image, sweeping from sharp reality on the left to a more painterly view.
The magnificent, ice-sculpted peaks of the Cuernos del Paine tower to 2,460 metres, the shear granite spires eroded to near-vertical drops. Such is the scale that one of the largest flying birds in the world, the Andean condor, soars in the centre to the left of the far mountain, but remains dwarfed, practically invisible.
