A delicate balance

Carlos Pérez Naval's Image

Using the family car as a hide, and as shelter from the snow, Carlos scanned the reeds through his camera. Spotting movement, he followed the little bird as it flitted among the stems, waiting for it to show itself. Finally, just as the light changed, it paused for a second, side-on, at the edge of the reeds.

Chiffchaffs, which earn their name from their simple chiff chaff song, are one of the first songbirds to arrive in spring. This small migratory species must eat large quantities of insects to survive, picking them from the trees and snapping them up during flight.,
