An unexpected snowstorm hit the day Josiah went looking for snowy owls with his family.
After nine hours, they finally spotted some in the blizzard. ‘I couldn’t believe it when this handsome male flew towards us and caught a vole,’ Josiah recalls. Hands freezing in the -30°C wind-chill, he neatly captured the elegant bird in its harsh environment. The ghostly white plumage of the snowy owl develops with age. While some elderly males turn completely white, many retain small flecks of black, and females stay spotted. Unusual among owls, the snowy owl hunts mainly during the day, using its keen eyesight and hearing to discover prey under thick vegetation or snow.

Josiah has been interested in nature photography since he was seven. He had always wanted to join his father and big sister on outings in the Albertan wilderness, where he eventually worked on his photography technique. He was named Young Outdoor Photographer of the Year in 2014 and was featured in a short film by Nikon about his wildlife and conservation photography.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
