Ndeze, a nine-year-old orphan mountain gorilla, looks on as her 12-year-old female companion, Maisha, is given her annual health check by gorilla doctor Eddy Kambale.
‘The deep bonds that exist between these orphans, their carers and Eddy is one of the most touching things I have ever had the privilege of witnessing,’ says Marcus. All four mountain gorillas at the Senkwekwe Centre have been rescued from poachers and traffickers, having suffered traumatic experiences. The centre – named after Ndeze’s father, who was murdered along with her mother and other family members in 2007 – is just part of the park’s efforts to protect the remaining critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Marcus’s background in environmental management led him to Kenya in 2011, and sparked his fascination for sub-Saharan Africa. He works with numerous travel magazines, but much of his work focuses on the efforts of non-profit organisations. Marcus spends most of the year on the road, and tries to convey the atmosphere and moods he experiences through his images.
