Colours in ice

Dag Røttereng's Image

It is rare to find a pond with a surface of solid ice that is crystal clear,’ says Dag.

Taking a tripod, Dag ventured several metres out on to the ice and found this pretty composition, a frozen leaf encased in a crystal-like tomb, its yellow leaves laid over a blue ice crack. Pondweeds such as the leaf here are both a blessing and a threat. They are an important source of food for wildlife, and add dissolved oxygen to the water, while also removing carbon dioxide. However, colonies of some species can be troublesome, overgrowing and dominating other plants and are considered invasive species in some parts of the world.
