Marc was trekking through the forest near his home in the Val d’Aran, northern Spain.
As usual, he was carrying his camera and keeping a lookout for animals, so he was thrilled to come across a large grass snake. ‘I have a great passion for reptiles, especially snakes,’ he says, ‘and it is rare to see this kind where I live’. The grass snake, which was just over a metre long, was very alert and started moving. As the light was poor, Marc used a wide aperture, giving him a narrow depth of field (the depth that would be in focus). With only a moment to compose the picture, he had the skill to take a portrait with the focus on the key part of the subject – its eyes.

Marc loves the mountains that surround his home in the Spanish Pyrenees, where he enjoys trekking, mountain biking and skiing. But his greatest passion is wildlife and his goal is to improve as a photographer. His interest was sparked at the age of four by trips with his wildlife photographer father and then fuelled by a trip to Africa, where he started taking pictures himself.
