The haunting calls of common cranes are like trumpets according to Leon.
To photograph the birds, he and his dad got up while it was still dark and crept into a hide on the shore of Lake Galenbecker, northern Germany. The lake is a staging post for migrating waterfowl, including thousands of common cranes. A wall of mist had arisen over the lake at sunrise, and for a while Leon could barely see anything. Then, for a short moment the mist dissipated, just as a group of cranes flew by. Leon focussed on the submerged trees to help keep the birds sharp and the lake bathed in the gold of the early morning Sun.

Ever since he could walk, Leon has accompanied his father on trips to photograph nature, but he soon became frustrated with the role of spectator. He got his first compact camera at the age of three so that he could take some pictures, too. Now using a DSLR, he often explores the outdoors on his own, looking for interesting subjects to photograph.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
