Jordi was diving at Jardines de la Reina, an archipelago off southern Cuba, when he encountered this juvenile American crocodile.
It may have been feeding on fish on a seagrass meadow or on birds in the mangroves overhead. 'I so wanted to photograph it,' says Jordi, 'but it was shy, and trying to tempt it to stay with fish and chicken leftovers made no difference,' because it didn't want to hang around humans. Jordi got lucky on the third day. This time, when he slipped into the water, the crocodile kept watching him, allowing him to take photographs. 'I had to wrestle with my own fear,' says Jordi, 'not of this youngster but of the three-metre-long crocodiles that I had seen in the same area.' He is fascinated by crocodiles, 'with their bizarre beauty' and the fact that they have outlived the dinosaurs. Today, despite their perfect design for survival, many crocodile species are now threatened by habitat loss and poaching.
