The last tree

Daniel Beltrá's Image

The amount of earth movement to build Belo Monte exceeds that moved to build the Panama Canal.

Here, mounds of construction material mark the progress of canal excavation. A dead tree is the last sign that a forest was here. ‘It’s impressive to see how the developers ride roughshod over legislation meant to protect the forest and the rights of forest communities,’ says Daniel. ‘If they don’t ignore it, they find loopholes or get permission retrospectively.’
