Badger dream scene

Marc Steichen's Image

Every May and June for the past five years, Marc has been photographing badgers at a sett near his home town in Luxembourg.

On this early summer evening, the light was fading fast as the first badger emerged from its den to check its surroundings. 'I wanted to photograph the badger exactly as I saw it,' says Marc, 'with the setting sun as a backdrop,' and he had positioned himself with this in mind. It was always a gamble whether a badger would emerge in time to catch the light, but on this day it did. To capture the warm apricot sun-flare, he made a double exposure, first focusing on the badger and then defocusing to take a softer image, 'creating as dreamy a scene as it was that evening'.
