Subject: peptides that are involved in pheromone biosynthesis

Dear Acarologists,

Dr. Altstein is editing a book on pheromone related peptides. A chapter

on Arachnids/mites is needed. Anybody interested in writing such a
chapter

or suggesting somebody to be approached?

Here is the original letter from Dr. Altstein:

Currently, I am editing a special issue of Peptides that intends to

cover work on pheromone related peptides: namely, peptides that serve as

pheromones or peptides that are involved in pheromone biosynthesis in

microorganisms, invertebrates and vertebrates. I was wondering whether

you know of studies on "Peptide pheromones in Arachnids/mites". If you
do,

can you be so kind and provide me with a clue (e.g. name of scientist,

ref., etc.).

Looking forward to hearing form you.

With best regards,

Vinnie Altstein

Subject: RE: Euparal Usage

Dear Chris,

If Euparal is giving you problems perhaps you should change to a
different medium.

I find that the best mounting medium is Hoyer's. It is cheap and
relatively easy to make, is very clear, permanent and produces almost no
shrinkage.

To all:

Another mounting question. I was curious on the methodology and
trials
and tribulations that people are having with the usage of Euparal for
mounting. I have searched through the archive section, but was
wondering
if any other people have some thoughts.

Colleagues,

Setting aside the issue of whether we want off-topic messages on the
acarology list, you should know that this message is not accurate. The
United Nations is not gathering signatures for anything. Messages like
this one have been circulating on the internet since late September 2001,
but they are are not true.

Here is a site that tracks rumors, hoaxes and "urban legends," they have
more information on this particular message, including a link to a United
Nations Information Centre page that addresses the question directly.

http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/un.htm

No offense intended to Dr. Saboori, I'm sure his intentions are of the
best, and I share his concerns. Unfortunately there is a constant flow of
false email like this around the world, forwarded by well-intended people.

Takes a minute, lasts a lifetime...

US Congress has authorized the President of the US to go to war against

Today we are at a point of imbalance in the world and are moving toward
what may be the beginning of a THIRD WORLD WAR. If you are against the
possibility, the UN is gathering signatures in an effort to avoid a
tragic world event.

Subject: RE: Euparal Usage

Dear Chris,

If Euparal is giving you problems perhaps you should change to a
different medium.

I find that the best mounting medium is Hoyer's. It is cheap and
relatively easy to make, is very clear, permanent and produces almost no
shrinkage.

To all:

Another mounting question. I was curious on the methodology and
trials
and tribulations that people are having with the usage of Euparal for
mounting. I have searched through the archive section, but was
wondering
if any other people have some thoughts.

Dear acarologists,

Thank you to all the people who responded to my announcement about discount
prices on acarology and entomology books. The publisher's web page is still
showing the original prices of books, not the discount prices. If you
contact them with a question about any of their books in acarology and
entomology, I am sure they will be happy to give you the current prices.

Acarology, Proceedings of the 10th International Congress, was $180
Australian, and is now $120 Australian. Other books are discounted to a
similar extent. At the moment $120 Australian is about US$70.

Subject: Translation needed

Dear acarologists,

Does anyone have an English translation of this important Russian
publication?

Ghilyarov (ed) 1975. Key to the Soil Inhabiting Mites. Sarcoptiformes.
Section on Astigmata, by Volgin and others, pages 381-476.

I would be happy to make a reasonable contribution to any costs involved in
copying etc.

Thanks for your help.
