Wetlands

Wetlands are one of  the most representative units of the Humid Chaco. They occupy the lowest grounds and are very variable in terms of size and species composition, depending  on water depth, currents and length of the flooding.

In some cases they are pure stands of one or two species, such as the 

  • totorales, dominated by Typha dominguensis and Typha latifolia
  • pirizales with Cyperus giganteus
  • peguahosales, with Thalia geniculata and Thalia multiflora

Common floating species, that can cover large extensions are:

  • Pistia stratiotes
  • water hyacinth (Eichhornia azurea and Eichhornia crassipes)
  • the impresive Victoria cruziana

Other common species are:

  • Salvinia spp
  • Cabomba australis
  • Utricularia foliosa
  • Elodea callitrichiodes
  • Nymphoides spp.
  • Hydrocleys nymphoides
