Notes

16 records

Müller (1906) described the typical form of this species on the basis of a single male collected at Tiefsee station 173V at 29°6’S 89°39’W, placing it tentatively in his ‘mollis group’. Poulsen (1973) re-classified it in his new genus Paramollicia - a rather heterogeneous grouping of species. In his original description Müller also note a large subspecies, which was subsequently raised to full species rank (P. major) by Deevey (1974). plactolycos has not been reported very often; however, this is partly because many of Deevey’s records from Eltanin Cruises 23 and 24 cannot be included, because I have been unable to locate the data giving which the stations she identified the specimens. At present it full latitudinal range is 59°S to 46°N. In the North Atlantic all the records are from samples collected from depths of 1500-2500m, whereas Poulsen’s specimens are reportedly from a sample towed with 300mwo of southern New Zealand! Such a disparity suggests that there is more than one species involved.
