This is a large species that characteristically has two spines at the posterior dorsal corner on the right valve, the RAG opening nearly half way up the posterior margin, and the LAG opening some way anterior to the posterior hinge. Müller (1906) placed it in his ‘spinifera group’, which Poulsen (1973) re-classified as Paraconchoecia. It is almost identical to P. aequiseta and there is no certain way of distinguishing between the females of the two species. The males are differentiated on the basis of a single character, the b seta on the endopodite of the second antenna is profusely hirsute in this species, but bare in P. aequiseta. Males of this species are most common in the South Atlantic whereas P. aequiseta appears to be the more common in the North Atlantic. But until these two species are re-examined critically, records of either species that are not of males must be regarded as uncertain. hirsuta is a deep mesopelagic to bathypelagic species. Data were not available to plot bathymetric profiles.
