Notes

124 Records

This poorly known species was classified by Muller (1906) in his ‘spinifera group’ and was subsequently classified in Paraconchoecia by Poulsen (1973). It is encountered regularly at depths >1000m in the N.E. Atlantic. It is quite large and is immediately recognisable by having a rounded posterior dorsal corner and the LAG opening on a small tubercle almost at the centre of the dorsal margin. Adults were caught in relatively high numbers at depths of 1000-2000m at latitudes of 18° to 53°N in the NE Atlantic, and juveniles were encountered at slightly shallower depths. The bathymetric profiles show that the bulk of the population occurs at 1000-1250m in the Northeast Atlantic, but slightly shallower off Bermuda. Müller (1906) and Poulsen (1973) contributed the few records of this species from outside the Atlantic. Apart from a single record to the north of New Zealand it has not been reported from the Pacific.
