Notes

Records 50

Müller described this rare species on the basis of three specimens collected at a single station on the Equator in the Atlantic. Poulsen (1973) reported it from two Dana stations one in the Western tropical Pacific the other in the Indonesian Sea. Apart from Chavtur’s (1977) records, which, on the basis on his drawings, were probably the closely related species P. mesadenia, there are no other records from outside the Atlantic. Ellis (1985) redescribed this species when she described its sibling species mesadenia. All the Discovery records are from very deep samples (1500-3500m) collected between 18° and 53°N. Recently it has been collected in the subtropical western Atlantic. Probably this reflects the limited range where the sampling has been deep enough to collect the species rather then the true range of the species. We expect it will eventually be found in the South Atlantic.
