Notes

142 records

When Müller (1906) described this species, one of his figures (T.XIII.1) showing the tubercle close to the dorsal posterior corner of the carapace, was mislabelled as C. kyrtophora. Although in his written description Müller specifically stated no such tubercles was present in C. nasotuberculata, this error was perpetuated. Angel (1981) resolved the confusion, publishing new descriptions of the two species. So all records of this species, need to be evaluated critically, particularly those that predate Angel’s revisions. N. nasotuberculata is readily distinguished by the presence of the tubercle (less obvious in males), and by the left symmetrical gland opening on the rostrum i.e. anterior to the anterior hinge between the valves of the carapace. In males the e-seta armature on the first antenna consists of pairs of basally directed slim spines (whereas in K. kyrtophora, the most similar species, they alternate and are set at right angles to the shaft of the seta). Müller (1906) placed this species in his ‘rotundataAll the species in this group were all re-classified by Poulsen (1973) as Metaconchoecia species, a genus established by Granata and Caporiacco (1949). Chavtur and Angel (in press) are revising Metaconchoecia, establishing a new tribe and dividing the species into ten genera. They consider this species to be sufficiently different from the others to be classified in a monospecific genus. The map shows its known zoogeographical range is 54°S to 32°N, although not all these records may correct. The bathymetric profiles show that in the subtropical Atlantic it is predominantly a shallow mesopelagic species that seldom occurs above the seasonal thermocline and shows no evidence of diel vertical migrations.
