Notes

161 records

This mesopelagic species is very similar to L. loricata, with which it can easily be confused, despite its larger size and the sculpturing of oblique striations being obscure or even absent. Müller (1906) classified it in his ‘loricata’ group of species, for which Poulsen (1973) created the genus Loricoecia. Confusion with loricata may lead to its recorded distribution being unrepresentative. Its known latitudinal range is 54°N to 50°S, but it tends to be more abundant at middle latitudes. It is a shallow mesopelagic species predominantly occurring at depths of 100-500m, but adult females extend down to depths of as much as 1000m.
